Shooting snakes among the shasta daisies

Just when I thought I’d seen it all, a magazine showed up in the lobby of my building the other day that gave us all quite a chuckle. Frankly, I have no idea how it arrived there. It’s a big building – lots of coming and going -  so who really knows. But the main thing to point out here is it’s in the Pacific Northwest and the magazine, called Garden and Gun, hails from the South.

Shoot ‘em up gardner!

At first we thought it was a joke. ‘What do you mean?’ we all equally questioned. ‘We get out our six gauges and shoot at the rodents among our blooming begonias?’

Upon further investigation it’s a magazine representing the “Soul of the New South.” I’m a West Coaster, born and raised, so my idea of the old South is not pleasant. Confederate flags, racism..things along those lines. I’m assuming New South means how it is today. But honestly, I’m still quite baffled by the combo of guns with the garden.

We grow gardens here at this end of the country, but guns are not a part of the equation. Maybe a squirt gun once in a while, but a real bullet-shooting gun. No. So, I’m trying to be open minded on this one and figure out just how they market this magazine and who would subscribe.

I envision some Southern beauty posing with her petunias while pointing her pistol at an encroaching squirrel. I’m sure that’s not the case, but honestly it’s hard to erase that image when the magazine is actually called Garden and Gun.

Perhaps those of you from the South can enlighten me.
